Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Gaojiatian in the vicinity of the northern part of Liling County Town, Hunan Province. It was named by Zhang Caifan in 1964.

Synonym: (高家田组)


Lithology and Thickness

Basal part is composed of variegated conglomerate or cherts; Lower and Middle parts, of sandy shales, intercalated with two lenticular coal beds and feldspar-quartz sandstone, sandy shale and shale; and its Upper part, of sandstone, shale and sandy shale. Its thickness is of over 590 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its basal part is in a disconformable contact with the underlying Shikang Fm

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Yuelong Fm

Regional extent

It is distributed largely in the areas of Gaojiatian and Ganjuchong of Liling County, Shikang of Wenjia City, Liuyang County, and Fengjiachong of Lingling County, Hunan Province. Southwesterly till Zhuzhou and Hengyang Cities, the formation is commonly about 100-200 m thick.

Fossils

It yields animal and plant fossils, with the bivalves being represented by the Lilingella assemblage whose important members are: Lilingella robusta, L. simptex, L. cuneata, Qiyangia lilingensis, Hunanella sbuorbicularis and H. ovata. It contains also the Marattiopsis-Otozamites assemblage of the Dictyophyllum-Clathropteris flora whose component members are: Neocalamites sp., Coniopteris gaojiatianensis, Todites sp., Ptilophyllum sp., Pterophyllum sp., Czekanowskia sp. and Brachyphyllum sp.


Age 

Schematic strat column in previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Gaojiatian Fm spanned the Toarcian.

Depositional setting
